So many of us look in the mirror and think.. "What’s happening? Who is that old lady in the mirror? It can't possibly be me!” Tell-tale signs of aging definitely show in the eyes. Plastic Surgeons promote “the knife” as the only answer to younger looking eyes. They might suggest an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) or a forehead lift (to raise eyebrows). While these surgeries do have their place, there are fortunately much easier, less expensive, and lasting alternatives to surgery that will take years off your appearance. Let’s start with Botox Cosmetic. In my office, I use Botox Cosmetic to raise the eyebrows. As we age, gravity takes over and our facial features start to fall. As your eyebrows fall, it gives the appearance of smaller, older eyes. Four Good Reasons to Exfoliate

The skin naturally exfoliates about every 28 days. But it can only shed so much on its own. Exfoliation is key in maintaining healthy skin, helping it shed quicker than normal, which is why exfoliators need to be used. We're taught to exfoliate the face because dead skin can lead to a dull complexion and accentuate the signs of aging. How do injectables make me look younger?

We all know an aging face when we see it, but most of us cannot really say what makes us look old. There are the obvious signs – gray hair, wrinkles, and age spots. But look at Joan Rivers -- her hair is blonde, she has no wrinkles or age spots. Yet no-one would mistake her for a 30-year old. Why? Youthful faces are full, while older faces are thin and hollow. As people age, they lose facial fat and volume – in short, their faces deflate. The upper eyelids and eyebrows begin to fall. The fat of the upper cheek falls and makes the bony area below the eye socket more prominent. Hollow areas develop below the eyes. We develop lines between the nose and cheeks and deep lines below our mouths. Injectables add volume to the face. Adding volume to the cheek bones can restore fullness to the entire upper face and also reduce sagging of the jowls. Eyebrows can be lifted with Botox. Hollow eyes can be rejuvenated by adding fillers. Several fillers are available such as Radiesse, Restylane and Juvederm. Women who use injectables may postpone the need for a facelift by 10 to 15 years. Many 40 year olds can delay their facelift to the early 60s. Even after a facelift, many women need a filler, such as Radiesse, to restore volume to their face. A facelift will smooth and lift the skin, but it does not offer the fullness we need to look youthful. Thus, many facelift patients find the best results come from combining fillers with their facelift.

Botox and the male patient!

Botox for men is on the rise. Last year in the US, 300,000 men used Botox to get rid of their forehead wrinkles and the lines around their eyes. In fact, Botox for men is becoming such a big business that it even has a nickname: Boytox. The social acceptance among everyday males is fueled by celebrities like Patrick Dempsey, Simon Cowell and others who talk openly and on the record about their Botox use. The goal for men, as in women, is to smooth away the signs of aging. As with any patient considering a new procedure, an in-depth hands-on consultation that carefully considers the goals of the patient is critical. Some men view the use of Botox as a career investment. With the younger generation nipping at their heels, and poised to take their place, seasoned executives feel the competitive pressure to not only look good, but to project a commanding image of power and mastery. Many men admit that not only does Botox make them look younger, but it creates a stronger, more inscrutable image, which they hope to parlay into enhancing their authority in the board room. Men appreciate that the Botox procedure is virtually painless with no down time. It takes about ten minutes or less to administer Botox and in a few days the signs of stress, anger and age literally vanish. There are some anatomical differences that make the approach to injecting men slightly different than women. Men usually need more Botox to erase vertical frown lines because their facial muscles are much stronger and thicker. In addition to anti-aging, men use Botox to cure excessive sweating of the underarms, face, feet and palms of the hand.

The Dinner and Auction raised nearly $3 million for cancer research. Notes Sara, “Since its inception in 1976, this Foundation has awarded over $75 million to support the work of more than 175 researchers across the globe.” Singer-songwriter Kid Rock performed at the venue, held at the NYC landmark Park Avenue Armory. Does Dysport last longer than Botox?

Clinical studies have been mixed on whether Dysport lasts longer, short, or the same duration as Botox. However, none of the studies suggest a dramatic difference in duration for one product or another. Dysport has only recently become available for use in the United States. Unless new information comes out, patients should expect approximately the same duration.

What happens to my skin if I stop using injectables?

There is no doubt that Botox and fillers make you look younger, better and more rested. But there are some who think that when you stop using Botox or fillers, your skin gets worse than it was originally. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, that notion is a myth. In our experience, most patients' skin continues to look improved. Or, it will simply return to the state it was before you had your treatment. It definitely will not get worse. Let’s talk about fillers first. Fillers work by restoring volume to your skin that has been lost as a result of the loss of fat, the loss of collagen and the loss of elastic tissue. Fillers, such as Restylane, Juvederm, or Radiesse actually promote collagen production. It is logical that a product which builds collagen should have lasting beneficial effects on your skin. Botox Cosmetic, on the other hand, is not a filler. It works by relaxing the muscles that you contract when you have expressions, such as frowning, laughing or squinting. With Botox, you still have expression, but it is subtle. Thus, you are wrinkling your skin less. If you use Botox Cosmetic a few times, say three treatments in one year, you should definitely find that in year two, your results will last a very long time. If you use Botox for a couple of years, what you’ve really done is stopped the worsening of your lines.You’ve arrested their progression.
